Umrah: A Short Pilgrimage of Spiritual Renewal

Umrah, a sacred pilgrimage in Islam holds a special place in the hearts of millions of Muslims worldwide. Unlike the obligatory Hajj, Umrah can be performed at any time of the year, drawing believers to the holy city of Mecca to partake in a spiritual journey that promises closeness to Allah and the renewal of faith. The pilgrimage takes one week to complete. Whether you are planning your first Umrah or simply curious about this sacred practice, this article explores the significance, rituals, and profound impact of Umrah on the lives of those who undertake this holy expedition.

In order to understand how this pilgrimage connects individuals with their faith, we sat down with Aisha Hassan a mother of two.  “The moment I entered the Masjid al-Haram, it felt like the world fell silent. This journey was a transformative one. My heart pounded with a mixture of anticipation as I went round the Kaaba”, She narrated.

“ I had no plans to go to Umrah because I could not afford it, so my friend organized it and it was a surprise for me. It was a surreal experience”, Aisha added.

Umrah, also known as the “lesser pilgrimage,” is deeply rooted in Islamic tradition. It allows Muslims to follow in the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions as they performed these rituals many years ago. The pilgrimage holds great spiritual merit, offering believers an opportunity to cleanse their souls, seek forgiveness, and draw nearer to Allah.

To get more insights on how one should prepare before going for Umrah, Iwomantoday sat down with Abdi Omar, a Hajj and Umrah agent.

“First of all Muslims need to understand that going for Umrah is an opportunity for spiritual nourishment. This is not just a journey; it is an investment for an individual in their spiritual growth.”

“The pilgrimage begins with the intention and declaration of Ihram, a sacred state that involves specific clothing and a commitment to the pilgrimage. Upon reaching Mecca, pilgrims engage in the Tawaf, going around the Kaaba seven times as a symbol of unity among Muslims and their devotion to Allah.  Following the Tawaf, pilgrims undertake Sa’i, walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, reenacting the journey of Hagar in search of water for her son”.

According to Omar, “Other rituals include the cutting of hair, symbolic of spiritual rebirth, and the optional performance of additional acts of worship, such as praying at the Station of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) and the hills of Safa and Marwah” he noted.

Umrah is not merely a set of rituals. It is an emotional and spiritual journey that transcends the physical actions. The atmosphere in Mecca with the Kaaba at its center creates an indescribable sense of respect.

Zakaria Wandati, 26 is saving to one day go for this life-changing journey, “Umrah is a deeply personal experience, and each pilgrim carries their hopes, dreams, and burdens to the sacred city. I’m currently saving so that one day I will also visit the holy city”.

From the elderly seeking solace in their later years; to the young finding purpose and direction, Umrah has been a source of transformation for countless individuals. It serves as a reminder of the diversity among the Muslims, united in their devotion to Allah despite their differences in language, culture, and background.

Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world and Kenya has not been left behind. Many travel agencies are catering to Muslims traveling for Hajj or Umrah.

Abdi Omar,” Undertaking the journey of Umrah requires a lot of preparation. From obtaining a visa to booking accommodations and ensuring physical fitness for the rigorous rituals.  The logistical aspects demand careful consideration. Many pilgrims plan their trip, making financial sacrifices and prioritizing the spiritual benefits over material comforts, it’s a sacrifice”.

Umrah stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Islam, drawing believers from every corner of the globe to Mecca, the heart of the Islamic world.

Remember, Umrah is not a vacation, it is a spiritual undertaking requiring physical and mental preparation.
