6 Tips to saving your Money

Saving and cutting back on spending habits is something many wish to achieve but often fall short to accomplish. Here is a step-by-step guide that can help one develop a realistic savings plan without a lot of effort.

1. Record your expenses
In order to start saving your money, it is important to know how much you are actually spending on a daily basis. Begin by making a record of everything you spend every day for a whole month. This way, you will know exactly where your money is going. These include your groceries, gas and even mortgage payments.

2. Make a budget
Now that you have a good idea of what you spend in a month, you can build a budget to plan your spending. Limit over-spending and make sure that you put money away in case of emergencies. Remember to include expenses that happen regularly and not monthly, like car maintenance, check-ups among others.

3. Plan on saving money
From your monthly expenses and earnings, create a savings category within your budget and save at least 10-15 percent of your net income. If you are unable to save that much, it might be time to cut back on your expenses. Look for non-essentials that you can spend less on such as entertainment and dining out before thinking about saving money on essentials such as a vehicle or home.

4. Set savings goals
Setting a savings goal makes it much easier to get started. Begin by deciding how long it will take to reach each goal you make.
Some short-term goals actually take up one to three years. This consists of starting an emergency fund to cover a six month to a year of living expenses in case of job loss or other emergencies, saving money for a vacation or saving to buy a new car.
Long-term savings goals often take several years or even decades to achieve. These include; saving for retirement, putting money away for your child’s college education or saving for a down payment on a house.

5. Decide on your priorities
Since everyone has different priorities when it comes to saving money, it makes sense to decide which savings goals are most important to you. Part of this process is deciding how long one can wait to save up for a goal and how much they want to put away each month in order to meet that particular goal.
Figure out which goals to prioritize and set money aside accordingly in your monthly budget. Remember that setting priorities means making choices. If you want to focus on saving for retirement, some other goals might have to take a back seat while you make sure you are focusing on your top targets.

6. Watch Your Savings Grow
Check your progress every month. This will steer you to stick to the personal savings plan by identifying and fixing problems faster. With these simple tips on saving, one will develop a healthier relationship with money.
